Some tips to keep safe sleeping for baby (part 1)

Sadly, a small number of babies still die in their sleep for no apparent reason every year. But there are many ways that you can reduce the risk, today I give the following advice on ways to reduce the risk of cot death:

  • Always put your baby to sleep on their back (make sure they get plenty of tummy time during the day to avoid the risk of positional plagiocephaly) If they roll over after you've put them down, roll them back again. However, once your baby is able to roll from back to front and back again on their own, they can be left to find their own position.

  • Make up your baby's bedding at the foot of the cot and put your baby in the 'feet to foot' position so they can't wriggle down under the blankets.

  • Don't let your baby get too hot - the temperature in their room should be around 16-20 degrees and anyway away from any radiator or heater (a room thermometer is the best way to keep track of this). Don't give them too much bedding - a single sleeping bag or a sheet and one or two cellular blankets should usually be plenty.

  • Babies under 1 year old should not sleep with a pillow and other objects should not be placed in the cot with them. Cot bumpers, although not shown to increase the chance of SIDS, can pose a risk once your baby can move around the cot and potentially pull themselves up on the bumper. It's a good idea to remove any cot bumpers once your baby has learnt to roll.
